radiation monitoring system

Network of monitors to detect any rise in background gamma radiation and to warn of a major nuclear accident within minutes of its occurrence. The accident at Chernobyl in Ukraine in 1986 prompted several Western European countries to begin installation of such systems locally, and in 1994 work began on a pilot system to provide a gamma curtain, a dense net of radiation monitors, throughout Eastern and Western Europe.
