interferometry  The baseline in astronomical interferometry is the distance between a pair of flat mirrors. The visibility is the difference in brightness between a light fringe (where the light wave crests and troughs come together) and the relative darkness between fringes. If visibility is plotted against the baseline, the maximum visibility occurs at baseline zero and decreases as the baseline increases. At the resolved point visibility is zero. | In astronomy, any of several techniques using interference between multiple beams to obtain high-resolution images or spectra of astronomical objects. The very long-baseline interferometry system is an example. NASA plans to put radio telescopes, infrared telescopes, and visible-light telescopes in formation in space to produce images of planets around neighbouring stars. |
