radioimmunoassay

In medicine, technique for measuring small quantities of circulating hormones. The assay depends upon the ability of a hormone to inhibit the binding of the same hormone (which has been labelled with a radioactive isotope) to a specific antibody by competition for the binding sites.

The sensitivity of radioimmunoassays ensures their usefulness in the diagnosis of hormonal disorders. The technique was developed by US physicist Rosalyn Yalow.
