ranching

Commercial form of pastoral farming that involves extensive use of large areas of land (extensive agriculture) for grazing cattle or sheep.

Ranches may be very large, especially where the soil quality is poor; for example, the estancias on the Pampas grasslands in Argentina. Cattle have in the past been allowed to graze freely but more are now enclosed. In the Amazon some deforested areas have been given over to beef-cattle ranching.
