ranger

Government official connected with public parks and forests. Formerly in England a ranger was a sworn officer of the forest appointed by the king to watch the deer and prevent theft. The ranger is also a senior grade in the Girl Guide movement.

A robber was also sometimes called a ranger, as they ranged for plunder. The name is also given to a dog which ranges over the ground.
