rata

Several species of trees and woody climbers found in New Zealand and belonging to the genus Metrosideros in the family Myrtaceae. Ratas produce large numbers of fluffy red flowers in summer. Many ratas start life as epiphytes, growing on other plants before becoming self-supporting. The northern rata M. robusta grows to 30 m/100 ft. Its hard timber is used in shipbuilding.
