reaction principle

Principle stated by Newton as his third law of motion: to every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

In other words, a force acting in one direction is always accompanied by an equal force acting in the opposite direction. This explains how rocket and jet propulsion works and why a gun recoils after firing.
