recoilless gun

Also found in: Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.03 sec.

recoilless gun

Rifle which directs some of the explosion of the propellant cartridge backwards, balancing the recoil due to the ejection of the projectile forwards.

When correctly designed the result is a gun which does not recoil; this saves weight in the construction of the mounting. Their principal defect is short range and prominent backblast, both due to the propellant gases being ejected to the rear.
