red

Informal term for a leftist, revolutionary, or communist, which originated in the 19th century in the form ‘red republican’, meaning a republican who favoured a social as well as a political revolution, generally by armed violence. Red is the colour adopted by socialist and communist parties.

To be soft on these political philosophies, one is thereby tainted ‘pink’.
