Pulp

Sheffield indie rock band. Formed in 1978, it was notable for the witty lyrics of singer Jarvis Cocker (1963– ), often dealing with the themes of sex and class. The single ‘Common People’ (1995), which brought the band mainstream success, was a bitter anthem against the middle classes; the album Different Class (1995) was received with wide critical acclaim and went straight to number one.

Other members are bassist Steve Mackey (1966– ), drummer Nick Banks (1965– ), and keyboard player Candida Doyle (1963– ). Violinist and guitarist Russell Senior (1961– ) left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Mark Webber (1970– ).

Pulp released several early albums which made little impact: the mini-album It (1983), Freaks (1987), and Separations (1992). With the compilation album Pulpintro (1993), and the follow-up His 'n' Hers (1994) the band established a sizeable following amongst indie fans. It was not until 1995 that they won large-scale popularity, headlining Glastonbury Festival.
