red valerian

Perennial plant Centranthus ruber in the Valerianaceae family, native to the Mediterranean region. Its leaves are in opposite pairs, and the small crimson flowers in dense flat-topped clusters. Each flower has a narrow petal-tube, with a spur at the base, and a single stamen. The sepals are rolled tightly inwards at flowering time, but uncurl as the fruit ripens and form a parachute effective in wind dispersal.
