registration

In music, in organ and harpsichord playing, the selection of stops (levers affecting the tone qualities and power of the instrument) to be used, either prescribed by a composer or left to the player's taste.

registration

In computing, informing a manufacturer that you have bought their product. For computer hardware, registration brings the consumer benefits such as on-site service and access to a free telephone helpline. Software houses also give registered customers telephone support and may supply them with upgrades and new product information.

For shareware, registration is virtually synonymous with payment. Programs are supplied save-disabled, incomplete, or with frequent, annoying built-in reminders to register. Only by sending the small fee requested can the user obtain a code to release the program's full potential, as well as the legal right to continue using it.
