reification

Alleged social process whereby relations between human beings are transformed into impersonal relations between things. The Hungarian thinker Georg Lukács, in History and Class Consciousness (1923), analysed this process as characteristic of capitalist society. Later Marxists have developed this analysis, thus extending Karl Marx's early critique of alienation in the Paris Manuscripts (1844).
