relative biological effectiveness

Relative damage caused to living tissue by different types of radiation. Some radiations do much more damage than others; alpha particles, for example, cause 20 times as much destruction as electrons (beta particles).

The RBE is defined as the ratio of the absorbed dose of a standard amount of radiation to the absorbed dose of 200 kV X-rays that produces the same amount of biological damage.
