relaxin

Hormone produced naturally by women during pregnancy that assists childbirth. It widens the pelvic opening by relaxing the ligaments, inhibits uterine contractility, so preventing premature labour, and causes dilation of the cervix. A synthetic form was pioneered by the Howard Florey Institute in Australia, and this drug has possible importance in helping the birth process and avoiding surgery or forceps delivery.
