relay neuron

Nerve cell in the spinal cord, connecting motor neurons to sensory neurons. Relay neurons allow information to pass straight through the spinal cord, bypassing the brain. In humans such reflex actions, which are extremely rapid, cause the sudden withdrawal of a limb from a painful stimulus.
