repoussé

Relief decoration on metal, especially silver, brass, and copper, produced by hammering from the underside so that the decoration projects. It is the opposite of chasing.

The technique was among the first to be developed by ancient metalworkers. Exceptionally fine examples are the Vapheio Cup made in Crete around 1500 BC (National Museum, Athens) and the Scythian animal reliefs of around 600–500 BC (Hermitage, St Petersburg).
