reserpine

Psychoactive drug extracted from the root of Southeast Asian plants of the genus Rauwolfia, especially R. serpentina or serpent wood. It was once used as a tranquillizer for some mental illnesses and to treat hypertension. Digestive upsets and depression are possible side effects.
