respiratory surface

    0.04 sec.

respiratory surface

Area used by an organism for the exchange of gases, for example the lungs, gills or, in plants, the leaf interior. The gases oxygen and carbon dioxide are both usually involved in respiration and photosynthesis. Although organisms have evolved different types of respiratory surface according to need, there are certain features in common. These include thinness and moistness, so that the gas can dissolve in a membrane and then diffuse into the body of the organism. In many animals the gas is then transported away from the surface and towards interior cells by the blood system.
