retrieverAny of several breeds of hunting dogs, often used as guide dogs for the blind. The commonest breeds are the Labrador retriever, large, smooth-coated, and usually black or yellow; and the golden retriever, with either flat or wavy coat. They can grow to 60 cm/2 ft high and weigh 40 kg/90 lb. Retrievers were originally developed for retrieving birds and other small game. Their gentle, even-tempered nature makes them popular companion dogs, and Labradors are also used in police work. |

His pet was a big fat retriever who was going up to the Hills for his health, and, though it was still April, the round, brown brute puffed and panted in the Club verandah as though he would burst. A lost retriever dog, with hanging tongue, circled dubiously round them, scared and wretched, and fled at my brother's threat. Noisily blundering like a retriever puppy, his elated voice and great gestures filled the bare academy corridors with the joy of thoughtless animal life, provoking indulgent smiles at a great distance. |
