ripieno

In music of the 17th and 18th centuries, term describing the full complement of players, as opposed to a concertante (group of instrumental soloists). It is used especially in the context of the concerto grosso, designating the full orchestra, but it may be used to describe other music which exploits the textural contrast of a different number of players, as in Bach's St Matthew Passion (1729).
