Louis XIV style

French decorative arts style prevalent during the reign of the ‘Sun King’ (1643-1715), characterized by both ornate baroque features and classical themes. It was used especially for the sumptuous formal furniture made for the royal palaces. The interior designer Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) designed all the furniture, tapestries, and carpets for Versailles and the Louvre in Louis XIV style.

The Louis XV style (1715-74) was the French rococo, a lighter style than Louis XIV, characterized by the use of chinoiserie, asymmetry, and the scroll motif. The Louis XVI style (1774-92) represented early Neo-Classicism .
