rostra

In ancient Rome, a platform from which public speakers used to address the people. It stood between the forum and comitium (the main place of political assembly), and was so called because it was decorated with prows (Latin rostra) of warships captured from Antium 338 BC. Julius Caesar built new rostra at the west end of the forum.

In modern English the singular form, ‘rostrum’, is used for a speaker's platform or dais.
