Sale

Town in southeast Victoria, Australia, 209 km/130 mi east of Melbourne; population (1996) 13,366. Sale is linked by canal via the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Strait. The town has benefited from the deposits of oil and natural gas in the Strait, and from the brown coal to the south in La Trobe Valley. It is the centre of an agricultural, grazing, and dairying district, and wool production is important.

Sale is the administrative centre for Gippsland and the service centre for the offshore oil and gas fields in the Bass Strait. The town is named after the British general Robert Sale (1782–1845).

Fruit, oats, barley, and wheat are grown in the surrounding area, and beef and sheep are raised.
