salivary gland

In mammals, one of two glands situated near the mouth responsible for the manufacture of saliva and its secretion into the mouth. The salivary glands are stimulated to produce saliva during a meal. Saliva contains an enzyme, ptyalin, and mucous which are essential for the mastication and initial digestion of food.

Beginning with the embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the salivary glands, the first half of the book discusses radiographic imaging, infections, cycstic conditions, and systemic diseases while the second half is devoted to the classification of salivary gland tumors, with chapters on each tumor type and closing with a discussion of pathologic processes of the salivary gland.
This article focuses particularly on neoplasms of the salivary glands that are associated with an extensive lymphoid component and the unique cellular characteristics that subdivide these lesions into their respective diagnostic category.
