sanguine

In art, red chalk, a popular medium for drawing with many old masters. It was used by Andrea del Sarto, Michelangelo, Antonio Correggio, Annibale Carracci, and Guercino among Italian artists, in the Netherlands by Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt occasionally, and, in conjunction with black chalk, by the Clouets in France and, notably, by Jean-Antoine Watteau.
