Sargasso Sea

Part of the North Atlantic Ocean (between 40° and 80° west and 25° and 30° north) left static by circling ocean currents, and covered with the floating weed Sargassum natans, which gives the sea its name.

The combined effects of the earth's rotation and the oceanic currents are that the water rises towards the middle of the Sargasso Sea, to a level about 1 m/3.5 ft higher than that on the east coast of the USA. The air above the sea is very dry and high evaporation gives rise to high salinity levels.
