satellite image

Image of the Earth or any other planet obtained from instruments on a satellite. Satellite images can provide a variety of information, including vegetation patterns, sea surface temperature, weather, and geology.

Landsat 4, launched in 1982, orbits at 705 km/438 mi above the Earth's surface. It completes nearly 15 orbits per day, and can survey the entire globe in 16 days. The instruments on Landsat scan the planet's surface and record the brightness of reflected light. The data is transmitted back to Earth and translated into a satellite image.
