smart

In computing, term for any piece of equipment that works with the help of a microprocessor: a ‘smart’ carburettor, for example, maintains the correct proportion of air-to-petrol vapour in a car engine by electronically monitoring engine temperature, acceleration, and other variables. Designers are incorporating smart technology into an increasing range of products, such as smart toasters, which can prevent toast from burning. Smart furniture, such as chairs with cushions that adjust themselves according the size and weight of the person sitting in them, is a typical area of current research.

Architects are already making smart buildings, especially large office blocks and hospitals. Such buildings are wired with sensors to monitor heating, lighting, and air quality. A central computer automatically performs simple tasks such as turning lights out when there is nobody in a room, adjusting air conditioning, and even darkening photoelectric windows to counteract bright sunlight.
