Savanna

City in northwestern Illinois, on the Mississippi River where the Plum River joins it, 62 km/38 mi southeast of Dubuque, Iowa; population (1990) 3,800. Since 1850 it has been an important railway town, with repair shops and yards, and the shipping point for local agriculture.

The Mississippi Palisades State Park and the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge extend along the river. The Savanna Army Depot, to the northwest, has been a major ordnance centre.

The sufferings of the travellers among these savage mountains were extreme: for a part of the time they were nearly starved; at length, they made their way through them, and came down upon the plains of New California, a fertile region extending along the coast, with magnificent forests, verdant savannas, and prairies that looked like stately parks.
