scabious

Any of a group of plants belonging to the teasel family, native to Europe and Asia, with many small, usually purplish-blue flowers borne in a single head on a tall stalk. The small scabious (S. columbaria) and the Mediterranean sweet scabious (S. atropurpurea) are often cultivated. (Genus Scabiosa, family Dipsacaceae.)
