scale up

Jargon used by financiers, particularly in relation to dotcom start-ups, to refer to the ability to grow a company quickly while keeping the management structures in place. A company may have a profitable business model, but if it is not scalable then it is of limited interest to venture capitalists. Scalability is the key to a killer application.
