scallopAny marine bivalve mollusc of the family Pectinidae, with a fan-shaped shell. There are two ‘ears’ extending from the socketlike hinge. Scallops use water-jet propulsion to move through the water to escape predators such as starfish. The giant Pacific scallop found from Alaska to California can reach 20 cm/8 in width.
