scan

Regularity of the metre or syllables of a line of verse. To count, mark or test the metre or syllables is to ‘scan’ the line. A line is said to ‘scan’ when it is regular according to the pattern set by other lines in the poem. ‘Scanning’ a text also means to read over it quickly in order to locate information or to find the general substance of the text.
