Breed of dog originating in Germany and now found in three sizes: miniature, standard, and giant. All have a coarse coat, either all black or pepper and salt in colour, with a strong, square muzzle and bristly hair on the face. The standard schnauzer (about 48 cm/18 in tall) is used as a general-purpose guard and farm dog; the giant (up to 65 cm/25.5 in) is used as a police and guard dog; the miniature (under 35 cm/14 in) is kept as a pet.
