The direction of a sea breeze can vary depending on which is warmer, the land or the sea. Warm air rises and is replaced by cool air. When the land is warmer than the sea, the warm air rises drawing in the cooler air from the sea, creating an onshore breeze. The opposite happens when the sea is warmer than the land, drawing cooler air from the land creating an offshore or land breeze.

Gentle coastal wind blowing off the sea towards the land. It is most noticeable in summer when the warm land surface heats the air above it and causes it to rise. Cooler air from the sea is drawn in to replace the rising air, so causing an onshore breeze. At night and in winter, air may move in the opposite direction, forming a land breeze.
