English agriculturist Jethro Tull invented the mechanized seed drill in about 1701. The sowing of seeds in uniform rows allowed weeding between the rows of seedlings during growth, so improving the yield. Previously seeds had been broadcast by hand across the land.
Machine for sowing cereals and other seeds, developed by Jethro Tull in England in 1701, although simple seeding devices were known in Babylon in 2000 BC.
The seed is stored in a hopper and delivered by tubes into furrows in the ground. The furrows are made by a set of blades, or coulters, attached to the front of the drill. A harrow is drawn behind the drill to cover up the seeds.
