In medicine, deliberate consumption of an overdose in order to commit suicide. Many attempts at self-poisoning involve the use of drugs such as tranquillizers and antidepressants. Carbon monoxide, paracetamol, paraquat, and organophosphorus insecticides are also used in self-poisoning. The highest incidence is in people in their twenties and it is more common in women.

Self-posioning with paracetamol is a particular problem because of the ease of obtaining it and the serious consequences of small overdoses.
