seminiferous tubule

In male vertebrates, one of a number of tightly packed, highly coiled tubes in the testis. The tubes are lined with germinal epithelium cells, from which sperm are produced by cell division (meiosis) and in the midst of which the sperm mature, nourished and protected in the folds of large Sertoli cells. After maturation, the sperm are stored in a long tube called the epididymis.
