serotonin

Chemical widely distributed in the body tissues - in the blood platelets, the wall of the intestine, and the central nervous system. It is believed to be implicated in the inflammatory process and, in the nervous system, it acts as a neurotransmitter, controlling sleep. Serotonin is derived from the amino acid tryptophan.
