seven bishops, trial of

In Britain, trial 1688 of William Sancroft, archbishop of Canterbury, and six other bishops on charges of seditious libel after they objected to James II's order that the Declaraton of Indulgence should be read from the pulpit of all Anglican churches on two successive Sundays May-June 1688. They were found not guilty of sedition 29 June, a severe blow to James' authority.
