Suppressed are the sfumato effects, the murmuring obscurity, the trancelike attenuations and abeyances of time, the anamorphic distortion, and the spectral experiments with barely-there imagery and chimerical sound that have defined Sokurov's cinema. The human and animal figures are highly modelled and the whole picture is finished in a continuous range of smoky tones using the device of sfumato. In contrast, bare skin appears soft and supple because Dujardin studied the Italian Renaissance masters' painting technique of sfumato, in which the artist paints what appears to be the moist air that hovers just above the naked limbs of the figures. |
