sgraffito

In art, a linear method of decoration in which a surface is scratched through to reveal a different colour or texture underneath. There are prehistoric examples of its graphic use in Pyrenean caves. In ceramics the unfired glaze is scratched through to reveal the pottery surface below. Sgraffito can also be used to simulate the effect of a wood engraving.

On a modern scraperboard, a white line is scratched through a prepared black ground.
