shell

In computing, program that mediates access to a particular system or server. Microsoft Windows is a shell that interposes a graphical user interface and other utilities between the operator and MS-DOS. In DOS itself, the file COMMAND.COM is a shell that makes the operating system display a prompt and enables it to interpret user instructions. Shells can also be used to improve computer security.
