shinty

Stick-and-ball game resembling hurling, popular in the Scottish Highlands. It is played between teams of 12 players each, on a field 132–183 m/144–200 yd long and 64–91 m/70–99 yd wide. A curved stick (‘camán’) is used to propel a leather-covered cork and worsted ball into the opposing team's goal (‘hail’). The premier tournament, the Camanachd Cup, was instituted in 1896.
