diathermy

Generation of heat in body tissues by the passage of high-frequency electric currents between two electrodes placed on the skin. The heat engendered helps to relieve rheumatic and arthritic pain.

The principle of diathermy is also applied in surgery. The high-frequency current produces, at the tip of a diathermy knife, sufficient heat to cut tissues, or to coagulate and kill cells, with a minimum of bleeding.
