silencer

Device in the exhaust system of cars and motorcycles. Gases leave the engine at supersonic speeds, and the exhaust system and silencer are designed to slow them down, thereby silencing them.

Some silencers use baffle plates (plates with holes, which disrupt the airflow), others use perforated tubes and an expansion box (a large chamber that slows down airflow).
