sinfonia

A symphony. In the early 18th century the sinfonia was simply an instrumental piece in an opera or other vocal work, especially the overture; it is in fact out of the overture that the symphony developed.

Sinfonia

Work for eight amplified voices and orchestra in five movements by Luciano Berio (1968) which uses collage techniques, particularly the third movement, which quotes the entirety of the Scherzo from Gustav Mahler's second symphony: over this is placed Berio's own music and brief quotations from many other composers including Bach, Brahms, Ravel, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Berg, and Webern.
