Singspiel

Term originally applied to all opera, later confined to opera with spoken dialogue. Mozart provided the greatest examples with Die Entführung aus dem Serail/The Abduction from the Seraglio (1782) and Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute (1791). During the 19th and 20th centuries Singspiel came to imply a comic or light opera of contemporary manners or ordinary life.
