sleep apnoea

In medicine, temporary cessation of breathing during sleep. It is usually due to a transient obstruction of the airway between the soft palate and the larynx when the airway dilator muscles relax too much. Muscle relaxation is accentuated by the use of sedative drugs and alcohol.

Sleep apnoea is more common in obese people because the chances of airway obstruction are greater. The obstruction is overcome during each episode of apnoea by vigorous restoration of respiration accompanied by snoring and the person is aroused from sleep.
